Don’t look now, but this week’s ongoing rush of “World’s most…” and “World’s first…” hardware offerings are being further bolstered by storage specialist Freecom, which has just announced the arrival of its Mobile Drive XXS, which it claims is the world’s smallest 2.5-inch external HDD.

And, based on the above photo, we’re not about to argue the toss over a few measly millimetres should Freecom be wrong in its product posturing. Simple fact is, the Mobile Drive XXS measures in at a paltry 109.8 x 79.5 x 13.5 mm, which sees it safely through the physical litmus test in terms of being considered a convenient storage solution for professional or home users looking to carry their data while on-the-go.
Those slight physical attributes are enhanced by a form-fitting injection moulded black outer ‘enclosure’ that provides users with increased grip while holding their pocket-friendly Mobile Drive XXS -- which Freecom boasts is some 27 percent smaller in total volume than its closest competitor.
The Mobile Drive XXS enhances its market appeal by using a compact USB 2.0 connection cable in order to function as an easy to use plug-and-play device that completely draws its power supply from a host desktop or laptop computer system.
Freecom offers that its 155g (5.5 ounce) XXS drive is a low noise and low power consumption storage solution that’s perfectly suited for carrying everything from document files and spreadsheets through to digital photos, videos, and MP3 songs.
Available for purchase at this very moment, the Freecom Mobile Drive XXS comes with a starting price of 44.99 GBP for the base 160GB model, while 59.99 GBP will secure 250GB and 79.99 snaffles a hefty 320GBs. Each model comes complete with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty and unlimited free helpdesk support.
