Seriously big performance is emerging as seriously big business in the world of laptops, and that’s a market angle Chinese computer manufacturer Lenovo Group Limited is looking to tap with its beastly ThinkPad W700.
Described as a “mobile workstation,” Lenovo is positioning its new W700 as a slab of tantalising hardware equipped with game-changing technologies and innovations that should exceed the demands of even the most data and graphics-intensive users.
Equipped with an industry-first onboard palm-rest digitiser and colour calibrator, the 17-inch W700 also leverages its appeal with first-to-market technologies such as NVIDIA’s Quadro FX 2700M and 3700M Open GL graphics processors (with up to 1GB of dedicated video memory) and also support for Intel’s heavyweight mobile quad-core processor.
Other contributing features and functions include optional dual hard drives (HDDs) with RAID configurations, up to 8GBs of DDR3 memory (with an additional 2GB of Intel Turbo Memory), Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity options, and a spread of multimedia capabilities, includes an optional Blu-ray DVD burner/player. WiMAX models are expected later in the year.
It will also come bundled with support for Dual Link DVI, Display Port and VGA, along with a 7-in-1 multi-card reader, five USB ports and an optional mini-dock.
“No other PC manufacturer has a mobile workstation that delivers the sheer power, performance and cutting-edge innovation that Lenovo has packed into the ThinkPad W700,” enthused Peter Hortensius, senior vice president of Lenovo’s Notebook Business Unit.
“The ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation flat out delivers the command performance our customers demand at the desk as well as in the field,” added Hortensius, who also described the W700 as a “new breed” of mobile hardware.
While eager power-hungry gamers might be drooling at the prospect of nabbing the W700, Lenovo’s proffered ‘new breed’ is being targeted more toward professionals in the fields of science, digital content creation, computer-aided design, and digital photography -- though gamers would certainly feel its benefits should their pockets be deep enough.
How deep? Well, the ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation will be launched by Lenovo this coming September and will carry a starting price of just shy of $3,000 USD. The word you’re looking for is ‘ouch’.
