Already established as something of a widely appreciated desktop application that enables iTunes users to access and listen to their computer libraries through any broadband Internet connection, Simplify Media is now shifting up a gear via the iPhone and iPod Touch handsets.
Bringing with it the possibility for iPhone and iPod Touch owners to transcend the storage capacities attributed to their devices, Simplify Media utilises a companion app for Windows, Mac and Linux systems that streams and shares iTunes songs and playlists directly from the user’s computer and also from the computers of up to 30 user-approved friends.
Compatible with Internet access provided by the Wi-Fi, EDGE and 3G networks that presently serve the iPhone and iPod Touch handsets, Simplify Media dodges any potential legal confrontations with Cupertino-based Apple Inc. by only streaming pre-purchased music content from the user and their friends.
It is worth noting, however, that while no actual file downloads are involved beyond the application itself, Simplify Media will not stream any purchased iTunes music files restricted by Digital Rights Management copy protection (DRM).
Beyond providing broadband access to computer-held iTunes content, the mobile app will also deliver users related song information and data including album cover art and individual track lyrics, reports AppleInsider.
To help boost its appeal -- although it most likely won’t need any such boost -- Simplify Media for the iPhone is being offered free through the App Store for the first 100,000 people who choose to download it. From that point forward, it will cost $3.99 USD per download.
The existing desktop computer version of the application, which was short-listed by CNET on its ‘10 best downloads of 2007’ remains a free download.
