Further pushing the storage capacity of emerging solid state drive (SSD) computer solutions, leading American memory specialist OCZ Technology has revealed its latest 2.5-inch ultra-high performance Core Series SATA II drives, which promise consumers the advantages associated with SSD while factoring in the attraction of an affordable price point.
Equipped with new OCZ architecture, the Core Series SSD V2 line will be available with up to 250GBs of storage and capable of delivering enhanced speeds of up to 170MB/s for reading and 98MB/s for writing. The new Core Series SSD V2 will also boast improved seek times of less than 0.2-0.3ms, according to California-based OCZ.
“OCZ continues the trend of enabling consumers with the latest in cutting edge solid state disc technology with the introduction of the new Core V2 SSD,” trumpeted Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology Group. “As SSD technology progresses, OCZ will continue to release updated and enhanced solutions to ensure our customers stay on the leading edge.”
Helping support that customer commitment via the Core V2 is the addition of a mini-USB port, which enables users in the field to apply firmware updates to their drives as and when they become available, which should see OCZ’s new SSD range maintaining compatibility and performance alongside future platforms.
Other attributes of note attributed to the Core Series V2 include a price per gigabyte that OCZ claims is 50 percent lower than other similar high-performance SSD solutions currently available for purchase-- although the company has yet to back that boast with an actual retail plan for pricing and regional release.
Targeting consumer-based applications across both mobile and desktop hardware, OCZ is hoping that its new, wallet-friendly range of storage solutions helps contribute to the ongoing market shift from conventional hard disk drives (HDDs) to solid state drives (SSDs), which lack moving components and thereby offer increased performance, energy efficiency and usage reliability.
According to OCZ, its Core V2 SSDs are capable of running for “an excellent” 1.5 million hours between failure (MTBF), which should provide users with prolonged peace of mind -- as with an accompanying two-year warranty and OCZ’s “legendary” service and support system.
