BitDefender, the security company known for granular control in its anti-virus products, has this week announced the launch of Total Security 2009, marking the second pre-Q4 product launch of new software that security companies are known for (Kaspersky beat BitDefender by a week with Kaspersky Internet Security 2009). The new version of BitDefender Total Security offers a few new features and maintains the user-friendly layout associated with the product.

New to BitDefender’s Total Security offering is attached scanning. Total Security 2009 will scan attached devices, such as USB devices, mapped network drives, or CDs. Moreover, another handy new feature is the ability to manage scanning, and also configure every computer in a home network from a single location. The remote access will only work if users have BitDefender on each system, but a three PC license is included in the base cost of $79.99 USD.
Another new feature is download scanning from various instant messaging clients, such as Yahoo or MSN (Windows Live Messenger). Downloads on these two clients are scanned and, if both users have BitDefender installed, then the conversation can be encrypted. Taking a page from Symantec, which offers the same ability in its 2009 product (still in beta), BitDefender is also power optimized.
The power optimization will lower resource usage in a special gamer mode, limiting the annoyance of scanning and monitoring while playing a game or watching a movie. In addition to showing love to the gamer set, BitDefender is offering a unique “laptop mode” for on-the-go users. If a laptop is running on battery power, BitDefender will postpone scheduled scans, backups, and tune-ups in order to help save battery life.
Rounding out the new features are improvements to what BitDefender calls B-HAVE technology, which is used in its scanning and detection engine. There are also improvements to Web-related security for online activities, such as banking, shopping, browsing, or socializing. Web, e-mail, and IM traffic are now scanned in real-time for Malware, Phishing, and other identity theft attempts.
