Dominion Enterprises reports that a server within InterActive Financial Marketing Group (IFMG) has been compromised, resulting in the exposure of 92,095 records containing all the typical personal information that can be used as currency among various online criminal groups.

In a statement, Dominion said that the server was accessed by an unknown and unauthorized third party between November of 2007 and February of 2008. The compromised personal information consisted of names, addresses, birth dates, and social security numbers. The data was related to the credit applications of 92,095 people who applied on IFMG’s various special finance Web sites.
Dominion said it was mailing letters to the individuals whose personal information was illegally accessed; however, these letters are only going out if Dominion can determine if the individual was compromised.
Moreover, the company is offering one full year of free credit monitoring services to all those who were affected, and has provided information about additional resources where consumers can learn how to protect themselves from identity theft.
“We deeply regret this incident and apologize for the concern and inconvenience it has caused,” said Dominion Enterprises President and CEO Conrad M. Hall. “We are committed to helping those who were affected and strongly encourage them to sign up for the complimentary credit monitoring and to take the action steps outlined in our letter.”
Using experts in data and network security, Dominion said it has taken steps to enhance the security of IFMG’s systems. What is sad, however, is the fact that the security enhancements are reactionary; as is the case with most IT security issues, the larger the company, the less proactive it is when dealing with security.
Dominion reports it has alerted law enforcement and will work with authorities on the criminal investigation into the security breach.
