ASUS looks beyond typical Eee PC owners with its new N10 UMPC. Image: ASUS.Just as Apple’s iPod multimedia player line maintains market dominance by offering itself up in a myriad of attractive guises, Taiwan-based tech specialist ASUS is looking to crowd out the ultra-mobile computer (UMPC) competition by flooding the market with a host of different Eee PC units. Seemingly prepared to spotlight a new Eee PC each and every day over the last few weeks, details of yet more Eee PC solutions are now finding their way onto the Net via French ASUS fan site Blogeee.net. The new N10 laptop computer stands out in particular as the first Eee PC entrant that may well expand beyond the capable but affordable ethos laid down thus-far by ASUS. While its physical attributes still place in within the UMPC spectrum and its Intel Atom processor can be found on other Eee PC offerings, the N10 is notably different for coming equipped with 320GBs of storage, an HDMI port for high-definition media, high-tech speakers by Altec Lansing, off-and-on Wi-Fi connectivity, and even enhanced hardware security via a built-in fingerprint reader. Despite its somewhat upper-tier points of attraction, which could well help attract appreciative glances from prospective consumers beyond the typical pennywise UMPC crowd, ASUSTeK’s continuing splurge of Eee PC releases could also end up damaging the brand’s own market position. “Clearly Asus is aiming the N10 at a more sophisticated user than the Eee PC, but it runs the risk of battling with itself over the same market share, and damaging both brands as a result,” warned What Laptop’s Mike Browne in a TechRadar report. And, to compound that potential outcome, this week also sees ASUS whipping the covers off two other Eee PC models, which are the cherry red Eee PC 901 XP, and the purple Eee PC 900 XP -- both of which come with, you guessed it, the Windows XP operating system as standard. Other related specifications assigned to the colourful Eee PC arrivals include an Intel Atom processor and 12GBs of solid state drive (SSD) data storage for the 901 XP, while the 900 XP will come with an ‘unspecified’ Intel CPU and 16GBs of SSD. Both new arrivals also come with 1GB of RAM and are fitted with 9-inch LED-backlit display screens providing resolutions of 1024x600. Details pertaining to regional pricing and release dates have not yet been issued by ASUS.
