It's already been thrown out, took all of three days to work out that the biochemist knew not alot about physics.

Dr. Rossler taught physics as a visiting professor and contributed to micro relativity theory. I just purchased Dr. Rossler's book on Endophysics, a field of physics founded by Dr. Rössler. But Dr. Rössler is probably more famous for his contributions to Chaos Theory, such as the Rössler Attractor (you can find both on Wikipedia). Dr. Rossler is a multi-award winner and published over 300 scientific papers. An impressive genius, brilliant scientist.

I am all for experimenting and the progression of science. But 'Lets build the biggest 'friggin lazerbeam' and smash things together!' sounds a bit risky if they talking about black holes!

How could the emulate the effect of a black hole if they havent actually had one to experiment on. It's all theory isnt it?

Too many fiction stories have become non-fiction as history show us. Maybe some more research would be good before flicking any switches.

Or go and do this out in space, faaar out in space.

I wish there was something I could do. Something that could have some impact and help stop this catastrophe from being launched. I haven't slept in days.......been missing work......just all around unable to function. Just to think that its very plausible that after the 10th I will no longer be able to be with my wife.......my children's lives will be cut short before they really even had a chance to begin......and humanity will cease to exist. Not pleasant to think about and even worse to know it will probably happen.

How do the people of CERN sleep at night?

Sounds exciting, but i dont think humanity as we know it will die out just yet. That being said, lets hope they dont mess up, would be a huge was of $ 8 billion...

I think there is a fundamental (no pun intended) misunderstanding of the research being done at CERN's LHC.
Both Justin and Brad who have commented above me have totally missed the point of what is being done. Let me try to put aside your fears somewhat (although Justin seems to have already gone for ridiculous hyperbole and hysteria):
First even the existence of small (or micro) black holes (also known as 'quantum mechanical black holes') is wildly unlikely; when I say 'small' I really do mean it these objects, if created, would be tiny (No bigger than 1.15X10^6 GeV or approx 0.00000000000000000000000000205045Kg). Also when I say 'unlikely' I really do mean it; everything we have learnt about quantum mechanics would have to be fundamentally wrong in order for such a thing to exist for any length of time. Stephen Hawking (the respected physicist) has theorised the evaporation of such black hole in a process now referred to as Hawking Radiation.
I think a lot of the irrational fear banded around by the scientifically illiterate has to do with the use of phrases that the layman does not fully understand; phrases such as 'black holes' arise fear in people who aren't aware of how common such objects are. For example particles are colliding at a speed and force that CERN could only dream of only 20 miles above your head right now in the upper atmosphere. These collisions do not produce any earth destroying black holes so the LHC is not going to manage to create any either.
Now to address some more specific points made in this article and in the comments:
Firstly the LHC is not a laser beam (I'm British so don't point out that I've spelt that wrong because I haven't!) it's a steam of particles and anti-particles being collided with one another.
Secondly JUSTIN the creation of a black hole will not 'probably happen' try and get a grip here and curb your irrational fear!
Thirdly Stevie Smith (the author of this article) you should be ashamed of yourself; this is just pure scaremongering what kind of journalist are you to write such irresponsible nonsense? The headline 'The End is Nigh' is proof enough that you have no concept of the issue you are dealing with also your quote of Professor Otto Rössler fails to mention that his paper in which he makes these claims has been widely discredited due to it's fundamental misconception of the theory of general relativity and being inconsistent and disproved through multiple measured experiments. A mention of possibilities of the LHC would have been good; it's possible that the work done at the LHC will unravel the mysteries of the make-up of matter and the origin of the universe itself but instead you decide the important bit is the theoretically unlikely (almost impossible) existence of an object of tiny proportions.
