California-based digital video recorder (DVR) specialist TiVo Inc. has this week launched its TiVo HD XL, a new device it claims enables more HD recording than any other comparable satellite or cable DVR available on today’s market.

While its overall visual performance is unlikely to differ from TiVo’s existing HD unit, the new HD XL delivers expansive storage in the form of a sprawling 1TB (terabyte) hard drive capable of storing up to 150 hours of high-definition programming or a mind-blowing 1,360 hours of standard-definition (SD) content.
Beyond the advantages of its massive hard drive capacity, the HD XL also supports its “exceptional” video playback by providing the user with cutting-edge sound thanks to the inclusion of full THX certification. It also comes complete with a handy, backlit Series3 remote control and an included HDMI connection cable.
“What is great about the XL is it gives content lovers plenty of room for all the programming they love, saving them from having to decide if they need to prematurely delete a favorite movie or a big game memory when space gets tight,” trumpeted Andrew Morrison, TiVo’s director of Product Platforms. “Satellite or cable DVRs simply can’t match it.”
Existing TiVo features bundled with the HD XL include the direct-to-TV downloading of thousands of movies and television shows, the browsing and watching of “endless YouTube videos,” access to thousands of music tracks through the expansive Rhapsody music service, and also music video playback through Music Choice.
Complete with dual-tuners for the simultaneous recording of two different shows in HD while watching a pre-recorded show, the new TiVo HD XL is compatible with HD digital cable, analogue cable, and over-the-air digital HD (ATSC).
The TiVo HD XL, which is presently being exhibited by TiVo at CEDIA 2008 in Denver, Colorado, is available now through the official TiVo Web site for $599.99 USD.
Other retailers including the likes of Amazon and Magnolia Home Theater will begin offering the device from next week.
