'enriching humanity' is always a scary thing to hear

It's like the prequel to Angel's and Demons...

Oh, c'mon...they can't destroy the world with this thing. Black holes exist not only in space but right here on earth. For example: the Windows OS Vista is a big black hole and mankind still exists.

This is exciting for anyone who has even vaguely followed the progression of quantum physics. Ernest Sternglass's 'Before the Big Bang' got my interest going many years ago in the origins of the universe. There is more to fear in not knowing, than knowing.

My guess is the people calling in their fears also believe the Earth is about 6000 years old and the center of the universe. Had it not been top secret at the time, they probably would have said the same thing about the Manhattan project as well. God bless the ignorant.

-_-, if we dont die, we will know more. If we die, we were going to die anyway. and besides... The world survived George Bush... I think we can rest assure that this particle accelerator wont do nearly as much as he did. (hey, maybe CERN will sign bills, instead of Veto them..... CERN FOR US GOVERNMENT!!!)

while i am all for this kind of science and dont think the experiments will cause the end of the world, it does annoy me that this CERN rep has taken the responsibility of 'enriching mankind' regardless of whether anyone else has anything to say about it. creepy, hubris filled comment by one who should know not everyone in the world thinks like him.

'...the illusive Higgs boson'

Questions the point of the whole exercise, doesn't it: illusive or elusive?

This is the first I've heard of this Prototype. Why has the US been so quiet about this event? It concerns all of humanity and humanity should know of the outcome. Its like taking medications, but not being told of all the ill side effects
This is wrong
