With Sony having recently issued a global recall for some 440,000 potentially faulty VAIO laptops, you’d be forgiven for thinking that VAIO is presently something of a dirty word in technology circles. While that might well be true, it certainly hasn’t stopped Sony from rolling out fresh VAIO models to help freshen the brand.

Specifically, the Japanese consumer electronics giant has this week unveiled its new VAIO CS11 series, which is set to arrive in five vibrant colour choices in answer to the recent rush of artistic designs being offered up by the likes of Dell and ASUS in the portable computer market.
Various tech sources are reporting that the new VAIO CS11 series will come equipped with, a modest 14.1-inch LCD display screen pushing 1280x800 resolution, Intel’s 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, 2GBs of RAM, Intel’s GMA 4500MHD graphics accelerator, and a conventional hard drive (HDD) with a storage ceiling of 160GBs.
Other features include an integrated Web camera, built-in Wi-Fi, a touch-sensitive media control bar, Bluetooth connectivity, a DVD Super-multi drive and Office Personal 2007.
An onboard Blu-ray drive and HDMI functionality are also likely to make an appearance, although current Net chatter suggests these latter specs will be strictly limited to the flagship VGN-CS11Z/R model.
Though likely to be kitted out with a range of respectable specifications, the aesthetic trimmings attributed to the new VAIOs suggests that Sony is perhaps angling its latest laptop line at lifestyle rather than performance -- let us not forget the current consumer trend toward lifestyle-friendly Netbooks.
In terms of colour choice, the CS11 series will be available in deep black, chocolate brown, rose red, snow white, and the truly shocking fairy floss pink, which is pictured above (and yes, fairy floss pink is apparently the official name).
Sony has yet to issue official price points for its VAIO CS11 series, but it’s certainly possible that retail costing could shy away from standard VAIO hardware in Sony’s portfolio and favour more mainstream attraction.
Current fluctuating price guesstimates place the new VAIO CS11 series at around €1,000 Euros, which equates to some £800 GBP or $1,400 USD.
