Which is more important to IT - certification or experience?

MCSE 'Mayday! Call Someone Else'. In my experience, certification is worthless. It basically means that your were stupid enough to give M$ money.

Yea, I agree, in my experience I found the most effective IT people to be the ones who have learnt what they know on the job, not ruling out the value of a qualification altogether, just pointing out that it doesn't necessarily mean they know there stuff, and often they dont!

As someone who has tackled this issue from all angles (student, IT instructor, hiring committee member, and, now, full-time IT specialist), I can say this- IT certifications definitely help to get new hires in the door. For many of the IT managers that I've dealt with it comes down to a simple equation- 2 potential hires: both individuals interview well, test the same, and have similar educations, however, one individual has made no effort to get certifications and the other has at least one relevant certification. Hhhummmm...who would you hire...

For the interview I received for my current job, my manager was impressed that I was a 'Charter member' MCSA (meaning I was one of the first few thousand to get the cert prior to a specific deadline set by the vendor). What did this prove? That I likely achieved my success on this exam without the aid of braindumps or most any other form of exam prep material. I actually knew enough of the right answers to pass the exam. My advice to anyone just starting out- get some certification. Period.

I still strongly think that certification is important. I have work with both groups but those who do not have certification turns to think one way and not broad as a certified person. That is the key. Someone with certification has the capability to think in diverse way. That to me is healthy. The reason being that you would not like to hire someone for a single task all the time and what happens when that specific task is not needed any more? Think about this!!
