Don’t look now, but while tech manufacturers galore continue pumping out as many UMPC systems as they can before CERN’s Large Hadron Collider destroys the planet, computer giant Lenovo’s newest ThinkPad entrants suggest there’s plenty of life left in traditional notebook hardware regardless of any impeding doom.

Specifically, Lenovo Group has whipped the covers off its new ThinkPad X200 and X200s notebooks, which the Beijing-based company is lauding as more lightweight than previous ThinkPad iterations while also delivering enhanced operational longevity.
That essentially translates into a business notebook (X200s) that weighs in at less than two and a half pounds (1.13kg) and provides single-charge battery performance of up to 13 hours via a nine-cell battery unit. It is worth noting, however, that the inclusion of the nine-cell battery increases total weight to just over three pounds (approx. 1.36kg).
Powered by Intel’s Centrino 2 dual-core processor, the X200s also comes equipped with a 12-inch LED display screen (up to a resolution of 1440 x 900), 1066MHz DDR3 RAM of up to 4GBs, and storage capacities ranging through to 320GB (HDD) or 128GB (SSD).
Other X200s features include Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system, onboard support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity (WiMAX is expected to be included in a matter of months) and GPS functionality.
Accompanying the X200s is the ThinkPad X200 Tablet PC, which, like its business-based counterpart, offers a total weight reduction and improved battery performance when compared to previous generations of the ThinkPad.
Weighing in at around three and a half pounds (approx. 1.58kg), the X200 runs on the Centrino 2 processor and DDR3 memory, provides a twisting 12-inch LED touchscreen display, delivers around 10 hours of operation and comes equipped with either 64GBs or 128GBs of solid state drive storage (SSD).
Other X200s features include Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system, onboard support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity (WiMAX is expected to be included in a matter of months), stereo speakers, dual-array microphones, and GPS.
The ThinkPad X200s is expected to arrive before the close of September at a starting price of $2,242 USD, while the X200 Tablet PC is scheduled for an October launch at a starting price of $2,232 USD.
