Excellent review. Thanks.

At home I've been using McAfee VirusScan together with Webroot's Spysweeper for a long time (this combination works well, but is terribly slow) and I've recently been evaluating the Norton Internet Security 2009 ('NIS2009') preloaded on my new PC in order to decide whether or not to continue an NIS2009 subscription (free trial expires in 4 days):

I conducted several simple pseudo-'Malware' TESTS (the 4 summarized below) to check whether or not NIS2009 can eliminate all malware as securely (and PROACTIVELY) as Webroot's Spysweeper does.

The 4 'Malware' TESTS below showed that:

(a) NIS2009 DOES NOT block zipped malware files PROACTIVELY (NIS2009 DID allow the zipped malware files to be downloaded/saved onto my PC).
PLEASE NOTE that Webroot's Spysweeper DID block the zipped malware files PROACTIVELY (Spysweeper did NOT allow the zipped malware files to be downloaded/saved onto my PC).
-- cf. TEST 1. and TEST 3. below.
(b) Webroot's Spysweeper blocks and/or auto-quarantines malware files PROACTIVELY as it scans (before the zipped or unzipped malware files can be downloaded into my computer).
(c) NIS2009 DOES NOT auto-quarantine malware files PROACTIVELY (before the malware files can be downloaded into my computer); NIS2009 auto-quarantines malware files only AFTER a FULL SYSTEM SCAN has been completed (this is reactive and retroactive).

QUESTION: How can I force NIS2009 to block malware ON THE FLY BEFORE any malware can be downloaded/saved onto my PC WITHOUT HAVING TO DO A FULL SYSTEM SCAN over and over again???

-- It's always MUCH better/wiser to keep the dragon outside the castle walls than to have to deal with a caged dragon inside the castle.

'Malware' TESTS I conducted

1. Webroot's Spysweeper PROACTIVELY blocked all 4 of EICAR's antivirus/antimalware test files [www(dot)eicar(dot)org/anti_virus_test_file(dot)htm):
eicar(dot)com
eicar(dot)com(dot)txt
eicar_com(dot)zip
eicarcom2(dot)zip
Webroot's Spysweeper PROACTIVELY blocked and did NOT allow any of these 4 malware files to be downloaded/saved on my PC.

2. NIS2009 PROACTIVELY blocked and did NOT allow
eicar(dot)com
eicar(dot)com(dot)txt
to be downloaded/saved on my PC.

3. NIS2009 DID allow
eicar_com(dot)zip
eicarcom2(dot)zip
to be downloaded/saved on my PC.

4. When both downloaded files
eicar_com(dot)zip
eicarcom2(dot)zip
were unzipped/activated, NIS2009 DID block and did NOT allow the eicar(dot)txt string to be run actively (but the caged dragon is STILL inside the castle).
