Don't buy this product. I saw several complimentary reviews of it and decided to download a trial. Boy, am I glad I didn't pay for it. It seems that the people who are giving this a good review must be getting a kick back from the software makers.

First, there were a number of false positives.

Second, other software programs (including IE and Firefox) started to malfunction.

Third, when it would do a scan, the only options I would get were 'Take no action' or 'Unhide.' Never could I get it to give me an option fix or clean the problem. I also had to reboot after each scan.

Fourth, the settings on BitDefender would change by themselves. I turned on my computer once and found out sometime later that BitDefender had turned off the firewall. I hadn't changed any settings so I have to assume that the software somehow in it's total instability did this.

Fifth, it assumed that a program that I was trying to load on my computer was a virus and corrupted the file. I now have to pay for new software.

Sixth, their tech support is awful. I contacted them with these and other issues. They had me download a tool which would produce a file that I was to send to them. I sent them the file and never heard back. That was the extent of their tech support.

One wonders after reading your review if you did, indeed, bother testing this software at all or exactly what connections you have to BitDefender.

Given the amount of information provided in this review (ie the specs of the system tested on, the malware samples used, the entire testing process, etc) and the fact that The Tech Herald reviews multiple competing software companies with the same testing process, I find it highly unlikely this is some sort of 'kickback' review.

As anyone experienced in software and/or reviewing knows, no one will get the exact same results without duplicating the exact same conditions and 'constants'. Is your system identical to the one reviewed? Completely patched and updated? Are you running addons or plugins with your browsers? Are you running other security software programs or other possible interfering programs simultaneously? Any of these variables, and countless others, will cause you to have a different experience and give you different results.

As someone who has reviewed other products in their own personal field (for no compensation I might add), I can tell you the same thing just about any reviewer will. All anyone can do is report their own experiences using their own materials and methods. The experience you have will be unique to you and your testing environment.

If you have come across so many good reviews for this product, and had so many unique errors, it may be time to question less if there are so many unscrupulous reviewers out there suddenly throwing their reputations away for a single security app, and question more if perhaps your system may just not be as compatible with this particular product.

I have to agree with Sam's comment regarding the absolute lack of tech support offered by Bitdefender. I had the previous version of BItdefender installed on the three computers I use for my small business, and renewed for 2009. Immediately my network failed to function, and I can no longer access the shared printers except from the 'host' computer.
The Bitdefender software says that Bitdefender is not installed on the other computers in the network, which is untrue.
I have called repeatedly to Bitdefender, left messages, and even tried calling their press department to reach a live person but have been unable to contact even once to an actual tech person, and no one has ever returned my calls (in over two weeks). I am considering taking legal action against them for the loss of productivity suffered by my business.

I would strongly advise anyone interested in this product to avoid it, at least until they actually offer some tech support. To be honest, I feel like I have been scammed by these guys.

I have to agree with Sam, it blocked everything I use on the internet printer sharing, remote access (getting in my computer from my laptop) and many more and it blocked my favorite game too and I put it on gamemode which is a total fake from the 'normal' mode they are the same, don't buy this software its total crap and its a memory hog too it makes your computer slower by like 45%, but I have to say the virus scanning and clean/deleting virus is pretty good thats the only good thing about it, if your thinking of buying this anti-virus program, don't get something like AVG, McAfee or NOD32 (which I think is the best one), Kaspersky will all be better than this total crap.

I think Sam is very wrong but not 100 percent wrong this didn't happen to me. I paid for after trying it, it was awesome!!! My IE and Firefox didn't malfunction, and i m a customer so i m no kickback. It will automatically detect a virus that contains viruses and it didn't change any settings on my computer. I didn't have to re-boot after scans. Actually I may think 'Sam' is hired by Norton or what security company to bring down Bitdefender. But Bitdefender is not all perfect, I had certain problems with game mode by not activating automatically and the icon (the one that appears the taskbar) not appearing when booted and than appearing after a few minutes

I have been using Bitdefender products for 3 years now, and never had an issue on my home network. I think home networks and any anti virus system can be tricky sometimes, and do require you to read up.....some people just have no patience, or computer experience, or understand how to correctly narrow down a problem.

In any case I can never remember one real problem with Bit Defender, and I have had TONS of problems with every other anti virus I have tried especially with online gaming....though I will admit I am just now upgrading to 2009 from v10 and have only a little experience with it.

My experience with BitDefender has always been, much much much much better antivirus protection that the crap McaFee, Symantec put out, and much less overhead or obstruction to online games. In fact I have never ONCE had a problem that I know of linked to Bitdefender with ANY program i have used.

I do however also use the AMD fusion program (you can use it even if you use an nvidia based card, it disables all back ground processes while in game, and then turns them back on when done for better performance) when gaming that tends to nip those problems in the bud.

I am just purchasing a network printer, so if I have problems with it I'll come back and post.....but as of yet I have never had any the issues Sam mentions. I also have a feeling Sam may not have alot of computer experience, if your system is already unstable or messed up, then any anti virus can cause problems.

I had used BitDefender for several years, up until the end of year/new year update that left it in an unusable state, 2008 Total Security(disabled all functions). Upon rebooting my system would freeze within 10 seconds, uninstall BD and all is fine, reinstall and same thing(system freeze). I called and called to no avail, then tried the online chat in hopes of getting some resolve, all they could say was to use their uninstall tool , LOL, and install 2009 TS. This prog is same or worse then the 2008 version.
All in all I paid $70 for a prog that isn't worthy of the disk collecting dust. It seems as though that the managers that are left there after cutbacks are the one's that should have been let go, not the peeps that got the work done to make a product worth the price the hard working people of the world paid.

I agree with Sam that there are definitely issues with BitDefender 2009. My very first issue was that the software didn't get updates. Because BitDefender support is absolutley lousy (they wanted me to download some tool and send them the results), I re-install the software to get the updates to work properly again. Then a few days later, the software would crash because some BitDefender service wouldn't start. Again I didn't bother with their support, and I re-installed the software. This fixed the problem again. Now, the software continuously switches to Game Mode even when I disable the feature (very annoying). And the other day the software generated a critical malfunction report which I had to send to BitDefender support (still haven't heard from them). Additionaly, I bought the AntiVirus edition of the software, but somewhere along the line probably after an update, it started showing as Total Security 2009 with none of the functionality included in that package, and messed up the registration of my original package (it wiped it clear). I had to re-register to get those details back again. After a few weeks, it's showing that it's the AntiVirus edition again. I had Kaspersky before and never once had any issues like this. In fact, I never had any issues with Kaspersky. I wanted to try BitDefender because I was getting 3 licenses and it was cheaper than Kaspersky. I'm definitely going back to using Kaspersky.

After using bitdefenders clutter free, no system hog interface since version 9 then 10 I then jumped to 2009.
I have installed on a clean install of xp with no other progs running at all. There are major problems for not some, ALOT! of people.
No customer support either now days :(

My pc (with no other progs on for testing, I dual boot with a clean xp for testing) now takes 30mins to start instead of 1min.

Bitdefender must know that 2009 is total crap and will have very little custom next time it comes for people to reg.

I doubt BD will recover from this, I feel sorry for the staff at BD hq tbh.
I was ripped off Ł30 but I feel they won't have a job come next year.

After 3 years of one of the best AV around, it is one of the worst now, they take your money and hide BEWARE!!!

I'm not a novice and I repeat BD was a great AV till the 2008 version when they decided to make a great interface clutted with crap you don't need.

Thanks for nothing BD you ripped me off after 3 years of loyal custom. I know software sometimes has problems, but when you get no support either, not good enough!
