The appeal of Netflix and high-definition Blu-ray technology became even more rosy today when the world’s largest online movie rental service and Samsung Electronics announced a deal that will see consumers able to stream online Netflix content directly to their TV sets via Samsung’s BD-P2500 and BD-2550 Blu-ray players.

The instant streaming connection from Netflix through to Samsung’s players is made possible through a wired broadband connection and a Netflix Queue-based user interface, which requires that Netflix members visit the Netflix Web site and queue-up movie and TV content they wish to watch. Once queued, that content is then automatically displayed on a waiting television set through the Blu-ray player.
According to Netflix, the streaming service will shift into action within as little as 30 seconds, while members will be able to use their Netflix remote to browse available content, make on-screen selections and choices, read show synopses and even rate movies. They will also be able to track forward and rewind through their video streams.
Samsung’s compatible Blu-ray hardware bolsters the service thanks to the inclusion of Full HD 1080p playback, the award-winning HQV processor for the highest possible quality of HD viewing, impressive DVD upconversion rates, and the aural advantages of multi-channel digital audio soundtracks and 7.1-channel analogue audio outputs.
“In its new form, Samsung Blu-ray players become the ultimate content delivery box, combining on-demand access to movies and jaw-dropping Full HD viewing,” trumpeted Reid Sullivan, vice president of Marketing, Audio/Video & Imaging at Samsung Electronics America.
Existing owners of Samsung’s two compatible HD players will be able to upgrade their devices without incurring any additional charges, which will then see them open to receiving instant content streams from Netflix’s ever-increasing library of more than 12,000 movies and TV shows.
Those interested in the service but without the necessary hardware can purchase either of Samsung’s Blu-ray players for $399.99 USD.
And, seemingly not content with Netflix streaming through Blu-ray, the partnering companies have also said they plan to work together to enable Samsung to provide direct Netflix streaming through a range of other Samsung-branded home entertainment products.
