This is not for everyone, i mean if all you do is play your video games how are you ment to actually build relationships with people in the real world as you only meet people online, I know of a few gamers that have awesome gurls but you wouldnt have thought they were gamers.
The nerdy ones, i still say good luck. But good on the rest of us who like a game with our mates.
The average age of gamers is 40? I think they forgot to mention that this study was only done with people aged 18+
Actually if you read the whole document, it states they did a test with age's 6-13 as well. So they actually have a nice variety of age groups and gamer types here.
Yes some maybe exagerated, but what isn't these days? It's nice to see though, that gamers are such nerds as everything thought we were.
I don't find this all that surprising - I've never bought into the stigma associated with video games. I think that the stats on the income might be misinterpreted, however - I think it more likely that a higher income prompts the household to purchase more video games, rather than the games resulting in a higher income.
Is anyone surprised that both studies, funded BY the video industry, would arrive at any other conclusion?
I am surprised that anyone is surprised by this article. When did the first videogames land? Pong was released in 1972 (and it wasn't _the_ first). That's 36 years ago. The big arcade boom, led by Asteroids, Space Invaders, Frogger, etc. started in the late 70's and early 80's.
Who grew up with these? The current 30+ year olds, like me. Born in 1975, gaming since I can remember. What, because I became 30 years old, married with a wife and child, I am not allowed to play video games anymore for fear of being pointed at and called a nerd or social outcast? Whatever.
The major misconception with video games is that they are toys, or for kids. Not so. Gone are the days when you could plop a kid in front of a first generation NES and hand them a game and know that it was light, fluffy, family fare (except for a few special cases, Friday the 13th, I am looking at you). These days games have ratings up to M, Mature, for 17 years and older. Why? Because as we grew up, so did the themes that games dealt with. The games matured as we matured.
Time to ditch the stereotypes.
My concern with gaming is that the players are not looking at one another. The time spent is in competition and looking at a screen.
Everything we do that is considered success is spent looking through a screen. wind screen in cars, Television screen, Computer screen,Game boys, cell phone, video games.etc
The question that is raised for me is where will the time come for us to look up at each other and smile? This generation will know the landscape of the screen images better than they know the faces of the ones they care about.
I have to agree with The Smokey on this. The sterotype has to go, not all nerds play videogames, and you can probably see that by the amount people are spending on video games right now. Have they not surpassed the movie industry in revenue? Cant be that many nerds..
And, by making more mature games, the video game industry is just trying to keep more money flowing in, as 30+ individuals seem to have one thing that most children dont right now, money.
Hey, I'm a 40+ something here, and remember seeing Pong on the shelves at retail stores, and yes I've dumped many a quarter into arcade machines. But I am also married with 2 kids, and enjoy playing video games with them every once in a while.
Take a step back and look at the movie industry and the video game industry, and what is the big difference between the two, Interactivity people, we interact with video games, we have to think about our next move, we can socially interact with others all around the globe (WoW).
What kind of interaction is there when watching a movie? None, zip, nada.
Quite frankly I'm not laying out close to 100 dollars to watch the mindless tripe in the theaters these days. I (and my kids) enjoy the interactivity that videos gives us, and that everyone, is where my hard earned dollar goes.
Well as we all would love to believe that video gamers make more money as a result is a purely a fantasy. This study is flawed from its inception. The reason why house holds with gamers in them make more money is not a result of them being gamers but having more money to purchase game systems and upgrade computer components to play the latest games on their PC's. If you reverse how you present the results being 'people who make more money are more likely to buy game systems and become gamers.' really thats obvious logic. really is this a story or an add from game producers to entice people to play more games to further degenerate themselves from real life and become obedient consumers. To degenerate their mental states to believe everything they read as truth with a tunnel vision onto a single perspective. god i hate to say it but its time for ww3 to reboot humanities scales of morality. if things continue the way they are we will all be slaves with out knowing it for ever.

And, I was always told that I am a loser for playing video games.. who would have thought that the opposite would be true. The problem here is, within this same year, 2 other studies will come out stating the opposite is true. So, none of this really matters.
I love video games, and have been playing them since I was a child, and now I am almost 30. Video games, are not a problem,, children obsessed with video games is. You still have to draw a fine line between your active life and your gamer life. Oh, and dont play World Of Warcraft, cause apparently it ruins yoru life.
