Ontario-based Research In Motion’s popular BlackBerry smartphone line is now in a position to offer live mobile video streaming on select models thanks to a new content deal signed with leading provider Qik Inc.

Set for an initial introduction on the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Pearl handsets, Qik’s free service will enable users to stream live video to the Internet from their BlackBerrys “in just two clicks.”
And, expanding on the service’s interactive appeal, those users choosing to watch streaming videos through the Net can also participate in live chat sessions with the actual person behind the broadcast.
Excited to be bringing Qik’s “lifestyle technology” to the millions of mobile users equipped with BlackBerry handsets, company co-founder Ramu Sunkara trumpeted that the mobile live video service is now supported through “the broadest range of platforms,” including Symbian, Windows Mobile, Java, and now BlackBerry.
Lauding the feature-rich popularity of the BlackBerry smartphone across the North American market, Qik further claims the integration of its live video streaming will provide the phones with “a whole new dimension” when it comes to mobile functionality.
In detailing Qik’s online reach, the California-based company has recently streamed behind the scenes video footage from Sarah Palin and Joe Biden’s vice presidential debate, interviews with comedian Dane Cook, the revamp launch of Apple’s MacBook notebooks, and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s speech regarding the global economic climate.
In order to receive Qik, owners of compatible BlackBerry devices need only register at the official Qik Web site.
The addition of Qik (currently in alpha and headed towards beta) is presently available through the BlackBerry Bold and also the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 and BlackBerry Pearl 8130 handsets -- through they must be running on the BlackBerry Operating System (v4.5).
Already open to almost 70 different mobile phone handsets, extended support for the BlackBerry Curve and BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 is expected in the near future.
