With the iTunes Store sitting proudly as the leading music seller in the U.S., deposed retail giant Walmart is looking to drag the laurels from beneath Apple Inc. by launching a new and improved version of its MP3 Music Downloads portal.

Building upon online foundations first laid in February of this year, Walmart’s MP3 Music Download store has now expanded to include more than 3 million MP3 tracks covering prominent recording artists from all four of the world’s leading labels and various independents.
And, what’s more, music lovers can get their hands on Walmart’s content at a lowest price of $0.74 USD, which the retailer says provides its customers with “greater value and an even bigger selection in digital music.”
In a move to further bolster the positioning and appeal of its online store, Walmart is also offering a free MP3 download with every (olde) CD purchased either through walk-in stores or online.
“Music is an important part of our customers’ lives and our new MP3 store provides a platform to further enhance our music offering and grow with our customers’ evolving needs,” trumpeted Tom Welch, music buyer for Walmart Stores Inc.
“As customers consume music through multiple formats such as MP3s, CDs, DVDs, and video games, Walmart is uniquely positioned to offer them a deep catalog of music in the format of their choice complemented by an expanded assortment of merchandise at great values.”
According to Walmart, some of the new elements associated with the revamped store include ‘Top 25’ songs from artists such as Carrie Underwood, Coldplay, Nickelback and Rhianna starting at $0.74 per track, a free MP3 ‘Track of the Week’ service, a free MP3 track with every CD purchase (starting in November), and exclusive content and performances from today’s hottest artists through Walmart Soundcheck.
Supported by Warner Music, Universal Music, EMI Group and Sony BMG, the newly opened store is compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac OS systems and is accessible through Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari browsers. Content procured through Walmart’s store is also sync compatible with platforms such as iTunes and Windows Media Player.
While not just boasting a low price of $0.74 USD on selected tracks, the standard track price on Walmart’s service is $0.94 USD, which is $0.05 USD cheaper than the standard price on iTunes.
