The deal will enable Netflix subscribers and many of TiVo’s 800,000 broadband users to take advantage of the Netflix “Watch Instantly” service, which provides online movie and TV episode streaming to televisions. The service will be provided free of charge.
According to both Netflix and digital video recorder manufacturer TiVo, an initial test of the service will be implemented across several thousands U.S. homes in the near future before being officially rolled out during the early part of December.
The consumer appeal of Netflix’s totally free “Watch Instantly” service lies in its library of more than 12,000 movie titles and popular television episodes, which are presently open to more than eight million Netflix subscribers.
Continuing its drive to aggressively extend the reach of its PC-to-TV streaming abilities against market rivals such as Amazon and Apple, Netflix last week penned a deal with Samsung Electronics that will see online content streaming through select Samsung Blu-ray players.
It has also signed similar streaming deals to cover Blu-ray players made by LG Electronics, Microsoft’s hugely popular Xbox 360 home videogame console, and a $100 USD set-top box from Roku Inc.
Terms of the Netflix and TiVo deal, which was officially announced on Wednesday, have not been disclosed.
