Stephen Fry far from pleased with BlackBerry Storm. Image: Fabiano/Flickr.Having already suffered something of a high-profile critical kicking from New York Times technology writer David Pogue, the Research In Motion's new BlackBerry Storm handset has now been targeted by British comedian, actor and author Stephen Fry. According to Fry, who describes himself as something of a passionate technology amateur, the newly-released Storm smartphone is “shockingly bad,” which is a view extremely similar in tone to the crushing appraisal issued late last week by Pogue. Writing on his Twitter page for the benefit of more than 20,000 readers, Fry recounted his stormy BlackBerry experience, which evidently swung between “such a disappointment,” through to flat-out “embarrassingly awful.” While pointing squarely at Vodafone in terms of criticising the handset's “terrible lag,” and its malfunctioning GPS functionality, the British star also took issue with the Storm's “inaccurate” touch-screen display, and its “awful, slow and fiddly text input” method. “What a pity... I so wanted to like it,” said Fry. “iPhone killer? Ha!”

Speaking with the BBC regarding his negative critique of the BlackBerry Storm, Fry insisted that, while he took no pleasure from bashing the new smartphone, anyone using the Storm for a couple of days “will admire my patience at not throwing it out of the window.”
Despite the grilling, it's not all bad news for Ontario-based Research In Motion, as Fry was also keen to point out his fondness for the BlackBerry Bold.
For those not familiar with Fry, he's perhaps best known for being one half of comedy act Fry and Laurie (Hugh Laurie of FOX's House), his memorable roles in the Blackadder comedy series, presenting intellectual quiz show Q.I., and penning several best-selling novels.
Sharp-eared videogame players may have most recently heard his authoritative tones as the narrator in Sony's much-applauded PlayStation 3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet.
