Building on its prominence as one of the world’s leading third-party software publishers, SEGA of America (SoA) has launched a new gaming and community-based Web site crammed with a host of free-to-play titles.

Accessible to any and all PC and Mac users, the PlaySEGA service is described as “a mini web game portal” offering SEGA fans access to gaming titles spread across genre categories including the likes of arcade, word, card, puzzle, quiz and sports.
Notable additions to the site include Brain Assist, which was initially released on the Nintendo DS, and also popular mobile title Sonic at the Olympic Games, which showcases the speedy sporting talents of SEGA’s longstanding mascot Sonic The Hedgehog.
Beyond offering existing and classic titles, PlaySEGA also boasts new games created exclusively for the online platform. Some of those fresh additions include Ice Shuffle, Hollywood Adventure Quiz and Aquatic Word Burst.
And, in an attempt to avoid being just another gaming portal, SEGA has included a “unique integrated system to calculate players’ highest scores,” which will then place top performances on a leader board of achievements.
Also, each game will provide players with PlaySEGA Rings, the site’s currency; the more games they play and the longer they play, the more Rings they will amass.
Gathered Rings can then be traded in order to customise the site and also create personal profile pages or “Escape Areas” that showcase designs ranging from New York Apartment to Swiss Chalet, Haunted House and Caribbean Villa.
“SEGA fans and new gamers alike can now come together in one place and enjoy some of our most exciting vintage and new titles,” enthused Nick Pili, Network Business Director at SEGA.
“There was a story out there recently that we have a locked vault full of retro SEGA classics in Japan,” added Pili. “Well it’s true – and we’ve been given full access to a lot of the properties in it.”
For those willing to invest a little money alongside their gaming time, PlaySEGA will soon introduce its Very Important Player (VIP) section, which will charge a small amount for the privilege of playing Mega Drive (Genesis) classics such as Columns, Puyo Pop, Chu Chu Rocket, Sonic The Hedgehog, Super Monkey Ball Tip n’ Tilt and many more.
