When it comes to exercising a green way of life for the sake of the planet, there’s little denying that every little helps. And, if you’re not financially able to invest in a Toyota Prius or cover your roof with solar panels then that statement certainly rings true with the wind-up remote control.

Not that conventional pencil batteries don’t offer lengthy operational longevity and a goodly amount of energy, but the new eco-friendly control unit available through ethicalsuperstore.com requires nothing but a touch of repeated elbow grease to power its rechargeable battery unit.
The online store, which is based in Gateshead, UK, offers the wind-up remote for a modest 19.95 GBP, which will return around seven days of battery-free function for a mere thirty twists of its (somewhat chunky) power dial.
As with many third-party remote controllers available today, the wind-up unit also provides users with a feature that enables the programming of up to six devices including the likes of cable or satellite boxes, television sets, and DVD players.
According to one online review of the gadget posted to the store, cranking the controller up during advertising breaks is swift and easy and means users “never have to run out of – or dispose of – batteries again.”
However, despite the green advantages associated with the wind-up controller, it’s unlikely to even put a dent into the amount of discarded batteries piling up each year – not least because modern remote control batteries can last for several years before needing to be replaced.
Other green devices on sale through ethicalsuperstore.com include the likes of a wind-up MP3 player and also a solar-powered notebook charger.
