In a post on Sony’s Official PlayStation blog, leading third-party videogame publisher Capcom has said it plans to make a selection of its original PlayStation and PlayStation Portable titles available for download via the online PlayStation Network (PSN).

According to John Diamonon, Capcom’s head of digital marketing, some of the incoming Capcom content expected to hit the PSN service during 2009 includes a trio of as-yet unnamed releases from its flagship Resident Evil series, along with unnamed offerings from the Street Fighter, Mega Man, Dino Crisis and Darkstalker franchises.
While the prospect of downloadable access to Capcom’s considerable portfolio is likely to excite most PlayStation 3 owners, Diamonon also teased that the Japanese game studio plans to announce a top-secret title in the New Year.
Although withholding any concrete information regarding the big-name mystery game, Diamonon enthused that: “It’s been a long time coming, but I’m ecstatic that it’s actually going to happen.”
It’s currently unclear as to whether the game will be a full retail release or a downloadable addition.
Resulting rumours spiralling off Diamonon’s announcement suggest that zombies-in-a-mall epic Dead Rising (initially an Xbox 360 exclusive) could be making a downloadable appearance on PSN.
Alternatively, current Capcom franchises without an upcoming release already attached to them suggests the likelihood of a fresh retail edition to Devil May Cry or perhaps a sequel to Lost Planet.
