Unveiled through the official PlayStation Blog, Japanese videogame heavyweight Sony Computer Entertainment has officially detailed its latest firmware update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) home console.

The upcoming v2.60 update, although not offering anything that could be described as either revolutionary or groundbreaking, is notable for introducing a selection of feature additions designed to help increase the appeal of the PS3’s media capabilities.
“The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection,” outlined Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network Operations.
“Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria,” he continued, “including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured.”
Other elements connected to the Photo Gallery application include the ability to put together slideshows set to music, and also the creation of individual photo playlists via an easy-to-use interface.
To enjoy the Photo Gallery tools, PS3 owners will need to install it separately through the Photo section of the console’s main XMB once the v2.60 update has been successfully downloaded.
Beyond the happy-snapper attraction of the Photo Gallery, the upcoming update will also enable guest browsing on the PlayStation Network’s storefront and will add support for DivX 3.11 video playback.
