After giving the world one of the most renowned science fiction franchises to ever grave small and large-screen audiences, the ashes of legendary Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry are to be blasted into space for all eternity.

The remains of Roddenberry, who died in 1991, will be joined on their intergalactic journey by the ashes of his late wife, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, who passed away on December 18 of 2008.
Prior to marrying the Star Trek creator, Majel Barrett Roddenberry found fame as the stoic Nurse Chapel in the original 60’s television show, after which she went on to provide the computer voice for the Enterprise in major Star Trek movies and spin-off shows. She most recently lent her vocal performance to director J. J. Abrams’ eagerly anticipated big-screen prequel.
Speaking with the BBC, the couple’s son, Eugene, explained that his mother had requested the somewhat unusual scattering process so that she and her husband would be able to “carry their spirits, memories, and the message of their life’s work into the cosmos on an infinite journey into deep space.”
The cremated remains of the Roddenberrys are scheduled to be launched into space aboard a Celestis rocket in 2010. A spokesperson for “memorial spaceflight” business Celestis Inc. said the couple will be joined on their travels by digitised tributes from fans.
