Boasting physical attributes of just 1.8 inches by 0.3 inches and announced as the world’s smallest mobile music player, Cupertino-based gadget giant Apple Inc. has today whipped the covers of expectation off its third-generation iPod Shuffle device.

Described by Apple product manager Greg Joswiak as being smaller than a AA battery, the latest addition to the diminutive Shuffle line will hold up to 1,000 song tracks (at 128Kbps) thanks to a 4GB storage capacity, which represents twice the data ceiling presently offered on existing iPod Shuffle players.
Beyond shrinking in physical size and expanding in terms of playback memory, the third-generation Shuffle stands apart because of a handy new multi-language feature (gimmick?) called VoiceOver.
With Shuffle devices known for their lack of an accompanying digital screen, VoiceOver actually announces songs, artists and playlist names to the user through the earphone cord, thus allowing them to gain a better appreciation for the individual songs and playlist selections they’re listening to.
Other features include batter power announcements and the ability to synch multiple playlists from iTunes, which is a first for the Shuffle. Also, all of the device’s controls (relating to play, pause, volume, and announcements) can be accessed through a remote unit on the headphone cord.
Available now at Apple stores – both walk-in and online – the new iPod Shuffle is available in either silver or black and carries a price of $79 USD.
