Having worked hard to earn itself a well-deserved niche on the gadget market with its pocket-friendly Flip Video camcorder, Pure Digital Technologies has now achieved enough industry prominence that Cisco Systems Inc. is preparing to suck it up for around $590 million USD.

According to AP, computer network specialist Cisco is looking to acquire Pure Digital to help bolster efforts to expand its market reach into various other areas of technology.
After only two years of selling its line of budget priced compact video cameras, Pure Digital has been able to rack up more than two million unit sales thanks to the Flip Video camera’s easy-to-use ‘flip’ USB connector, which provides users with the added convenience of joining the little device directly to a computer.
NPD Group market research figures cast over the 12 months ending in February of 2009 show that Pure Digital was second only to Sony Corp. in terms of video cameras sold across the United States, while the Flip Ultra camera topped U.S. unit sales in February.
While it remains to be seen how Cisco intends to evolve the Flip Video line’s capabilities with its existing portfolio of technology, NPD analyst Ross Rubin has suggested the company could well boost its consumer profile by introducing wireless networking through the diminutive device.
The emergence of Cisco’s plan to purchase the gadget prowess of Pure Digital comes hot on the heels of an announcement it made on Monday that will see the San Jose-based heavyweight opening its business to include selling servers.
