Arriving just two weeks after the official second beta, the latest test version (build number 7A280f) is available in four flavours supporting the original EDGE iPhone, its 3G successor, and also both existing generations of the non-telephony iPod Touch multimedia handset.
According to initial feedback reactions collated and put forth by Apple Insider, users of the new beta are reporting optimised keyboard input speeds along with improved performance when using the App Store application. Specifically, Spotlight saves its last search results and also gives users the option of selective app search parameters.
Other new elements include the ability to change the double-tap home button feature for iPod Touch, MMS alterations for those on the T-Mobile network, and restriction changes for In-App Purchase and Location.
According to Ars Technica, the beta’s highlight involves the delivery of a trio of push notification methods, which are badge, text alert and sound, enabling developers to register their apps with different notification types that fit specific user requirements.
Offering up a double-barrelled beta release, Apple has also unveiled a third edition beta of its iPhone SDK 3.0 (build number 9M2728), which provides an updated version of the Xcode IDE and includes a new Overview toolbar, an overhauled assistant interface for developing new projects, and the addition of a convenient drag-and-drop feature in Interface Builder.
