Following on from this week’s story of a lucky escape for 185 people aboard an ominously smouldering United Airlines 777 at Heathrow Airport, passengers flying through the skies of Canada have been left horrified after a man committed suicide by wrenching open a plane’s exterior doors and throwing himself to his death.

The incident transpired at a height of approximately 23,000 feet as the twin-engine Adlair Aviation King Air 200 charter flight was preparing for its descent into Cambridge Bay Airport in western Nunavut.
According to Canadian police authorities reporting on the mid-air incident, the unnamed 20-year-old man had been displaying a degree of unruly behaviour prior to his decision to leave the aircraft.
Before anyone could stop him, and seemingly without any thought for the safety of his fellow passengers, the man tore open the door – instantly depressurising the cabin and cockpit in the process – and leapt into the Arctic air.
Despite the trauma of the situation, the plane’s pilot has been praised by the airline for completing the remaining 110 miles of the journey and protecting the safety of his remaining passengers.
The pilot has not issued any official comment regarding the in-flight suicide and is reportedly too distressed to face media questions.
