According to various technology sources citing the official Windows Mobile Team Blog, Redmond-based software giant Microsoft Corp. is planning to use its upcoming TechEd 2009 event to showcase – and perhaps even launch – the apparent wonders of Windows Mobile 6.5 (WiMo).

Specifically, Stephanie Ferguson, Microsoft’s general manager of Business Experience for Mobile Communications, will roll out WiMo 6.5 during a special TechEd launch presentation for the platform that’s scheduled for between 13:00 and 14:15 on May 11.
“This TechEd session focuses on one of the biggest launches in the history of Windows Mobile,” trumpets Microsoft via its Mobile Team Blog. “Windows Mobile 6.5 is targeted at both IT Professionals and Developers, with a cool demo and an outline of great stuff to come.”
However, although many industry watchers have immediately interpreted Microsoft’s statement to mean WiMo 6.5 will be officially launched on May 11, it’s perhaps worth noting that current chatter surrounding an imminent release conveniently overlooks the words “demo” and “outline,” which suggest the new release is still some way short of its ready date.
In actuality, it’s perhaps much more likely that the word “launches” is in reference to those device manufacturers and Microsoft business partners currently waiting to take stock of WiMo 6.5 ahead of integration, feedback and yet more honing.
While initial reaction to WiMo 6.5 was lukewarm when it first debuted back in February – many seeing it as an evolutionary stopgap as opposed to a full release – Microsoft has been actively tweaking on all fronts and will continue that process until equipped devices hit availability in the latter stages of the year.
Windows Mobile 7 is expected to arrive alongside a new version of Office sometime during 2010.
Microsoft’s TechEd North Amercia 2009 event will be held between May 11 and May 15 in Los Angeles, California.
