In terms of general price and performance comparison, AMD’s latest muscle chip takes to the arena alongside Intel’s Core 2 Quad and Core 920 i7, with the former offering a clock speed of 2.83GHz and a price of $270 USD, while the latter pushes 2.66GHz in return for $289 USD.
While AMD’s more attractive price point and favourable stock-issue clock speed might well attract PC owners looking to upgrade their personal or professional rigs, the real appeal of the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition lies in the unlocked ability to overclock its performance to whopping speeds upwards of 6.5GHz.
Other attributes squeezed into the chip in return for the $245 USD asking price include a total cache of 8MBs (L2+L3), compatibility with AM3 motherboards, DDR3 memory support, and also backwards compatibility with AM2+ and DDR2.
In terms of the target market for AMD’s new quad-core CPU, those keen on pursuing high-end gaming or plying their trade on workstations in demanding design environments should be the ones with their ears rightly pricked at this juncture.
