If you happen to be a HD DVD buyer still suffering an uncomfortable rear-end irritation after seeing Toshiba’s high-definition format fall to the onslaught of Sony’s more expensive Blu-ray alternative, then Warner Bros. might just have a rubbing ointment that will partially relieve your pain.
Got the HD DVD blues? Upgrade to Blu-ray. Image: Andres Rueda/Flickr.
Specifically, that relief arrives in the form of a handy format exchange scheme that’s aptly called ‘Red2blu’ and sees media giant Warner Bros. offering to upgrade HD DVD versions of its movies with a Blu-ray copy for those who’ve made the move, or are planning to make the move, to Sony’s official industry standard.
Now, about that “partially” we mentioned.
While the Red2blu exchange offer may be kind, caring and considerate, Warner Bros. isn’t running the scheme for free. Moreover, anyone looking to receive a Blu-ray placement should expect to pay a relatively reasonable $4.95 USD per disc.
Also, anyone in the Continental United States looking to take advantage of Red2blu should plan on upgrading plenty of HD DVDs in one fell swoop as Warner Bros. is also applying a $6.95 USD shipping and handling fee per order.
That shipping and handling fee rises to $8.95 USD for residents of Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, plus any applicable taxes.
However, associated fees aside, it’s worth noting that anyone utilising Red2blu will at least get to keep their HD DVDs (they’ll make decent drinks coasters) and need only send in the official HD DVD cover artwork from their movies (no copies) in order for Warner Bros. to send back Blu-ray disc replacements.
