A decade after acquiring GeoCities during the dot-com explosion of the late nineties, Internet giant Yahoo Inc. has announced plans that will see the shutters drawn down by the end of the year on the long-serving Web site publishing and hosting service.

“After careful consideration, Yahoo! Has decided to close GeoCities later this year,” outlines a statement on the official GeoCities site. “You can continue enjoying your GeoCities services until then – we just wanted to let you know about the closure as soon as possible.”
While disgruntled users can expect to receive further details regarding the closure during the summer months, the GeoCities service is currently pointed traffic seeking more information to its online help centre.
The site also provides existing users with the option to sign on with Yahoo’s Web hosting service, membership of which will cost them $5.98 USD per month (for the first three months -- $11.95 USD per month thereafter).
While the closure of GeoCities is a clearly recognisable casualty in Yahoo’s continuing efforts to restructure its ailing business and preserve operating costs, it is not alone in feeling the cutting edge of the Internet pioneer’s axe.
Specifically, other Yahoo services set for the chop include Yahoo Briefcase, Farechase, My Web, Yahoo Pets, Yahoo Live, Kickstart, RSS ads and Yahoo for Teachers.
News of the mass service cull comes in the same week Yahoo reported poor first quarter performance figures and announced plans to cut its global workforce by a further five percent.
