While heartfelt gifts bestowed upon newlyweds have traditionally erred on the side of practicality by focusing on household needs as opposed to luxuries, Nintendo’s Wii videogame console is not one to pander to traditionalism, which is why it is fast becoming of the most requested wedding gifts in the UK.

More pointedly, prominent department store chain John Lewis has revealed that the demographic-busting Wii is becoming something of a regular entrant in its list of top 20 gifts put forth by couples heading toward marital commitment.
And the hugely popular Wii does not stand alone when it comes to desirable technological devices on the list. Specifically, items such as the eponymous iPod multimedia player and flatscreen LCD televisions are rubbing shoulders alongside more pragmatic household items.
“Two years ago, the top 20 products on the Gift List were exclusively traditional items from linens, kitchenware, china and glass but, in the second half of last year, the Wii Sports pack made it into the Top 20 [for the first time],” commented senior Gift List analyst Tracey Yates to The Telegraph.
Gift requests for gaming platforms and other tech devices are not exclusive to John Lewis, with fellow department store giant Debenhams reporting that iPods and cutting-edge televisions are similarly popular on its gift listings.
So, put down the knitting needles Grandma, step away from the crystal wine glasses Auntie Beryl, we’ll take the Wii Sports hardware pack, which is the console plus Wii Sports, and a 50-inch Toshiba HDTV to enjoy it on. Thanks.
Interestingly, the most popular wedding gift request at John Lewis is for digital photo frames, while cash or vouchers are the most requested at Debenhams.
