Looking for the mobile convenience of a portable hard drive that comes equipped with virus protection and is also built to withstand bumps and scrapes should you decide to scale a mountain? Meet the latest generation of Iomega’s aptly titled eGo data storage solutions.

Featuring new look USB 2.0 models that boast “superior ruggedness” along with the added peace of mind of “the broadest suite of bundled data protection software” presently available, the colourful new eGo line provides portable storage in sizes of up to 500GBs and comes complete with a free six-month subscription to McAfee’s VirusScan Plus anti-Virus and anti-Spyware package.
“In today’s world of increasing attacks on consumers’ data by the bad guys, it’s as important to protect your external hard drive data as it is to protect your PC’s local data,” explained Todd Gebhart, president of consumer products at McAfee.
“Iomega is the first to recognize this fact and we’re pleased to be partnering with them in this fight,” he added.
Housed within an anodised aluminium outer shell at little more than 16mm thick, and weighing in at less than 200gm, the new eGo is a “state-of-the-art” 2.5-inch drive augmented by Drop Guard technology, which should protect the onboard data from any shocks resulting from drops of up to 51 inches. According to Iomega, that equates to some 40 percent higher than the industry average.
Able to store some two million photos, 750 hours of video and around 10,000 hours of music at the 500GB capacity, the eGo draws its operational power from the PC or notebook it is attached to, and also includes a ‘Y’ cable for delivering dual USB power.
Other contributing features include Iomega QuikProtect backup software for simple scheduled file-level data backup, EMC Retrospect Express or Express HD for backing up data, applications and settings, and MozyHome Online Backup, which grants further protection through an online backup service offering 2GBs of capacity for free (unlimited storage costs $4.95 USD per month).
So, how much for all this portable storage and its associated levels of protection? The 250GB model costs $85 USD, the 320GB version is priced at $95 USD, and the upper-tier 500GB drive will set you back $135 USD. All drive variants come with a three-year limited warranty.
Iomega also plans to launch a ‘BlackBelt’ version of the 500GB eGo in the coming weeks, which comes with a specially designed grip attachment and a price of $140 USD.
