The aviation world is facing the possibility of a fresh disaster this morning following news that an Air France passenger flight outbound from Brazil on its way to Paris has disappeared and is feared lost in the Atlantic.

More pointedly, the Reuters news agency reports that officials from the Brazilian air force have confirmed an aerial search has now begun off the country’s northeast coast across an area where it is believed the Airbus A330-200 jetliner may have crashed.
According to an air force spokesman, search planes were dispatched from the island of Fernando de Noronha after radio contact was lost with the flight’s pilots
Carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members, flight AF 447 departed Rio de Janeiro at approximately 19:00 local time and was scheduled to complete its trans-Atlantic journey to Paris by 12:15 CET on Monday.
