Specifically, Apple has this week pushed out QuickTime version 7.6.2, which applies a total of 10 file-based patches to a selection of problematic and potentially malicious vulnerabilities designed to either prematurely close applications or apply remote code executions.
The latest patch update addresses no fewer than eight issues found in both Apple and Microsoft operating systems, while a further two solutions address problems only found on Microsoft’s Vista and XP platforms.
In terms of specific holes targeted by Apple’s patch offering, one of the main QuickTime vulnerabilities quashed ends a memory corruption exploit that was found to emerge whenever the media player was hosting Sorenson 3 video files.
Another noteworthy issue now put to the sword by Apple involved a heap buffer overflow connected to FLC compression files, while two of the patches concerned QuickTime’s handling of PICT files.
Other issues addressed by the release were centred on PhotoShop animation file formats, JP2 (JPEG 2000), and MS ADPCM-encoded audio.
Released alongside the QuickTime update, the new version 8.2 of iTunes should see the addition of platform support for iPhone and iPod Touch handsets soon to be equipped with new iPhone 3.0 firmware, which is due for release some time during the summer.
The update, which was issued on Monday, also delivers “many accessibility improvements and bug fixes,” according to Apple’s official advisory.
