While Sony Computer Entertainment last week unveiled its brand new PlayStation Portable Go handheld at E3 in Los Angeles, rumours regarding a slim-line PlayStation 3 or a retail price cut for the powerhouse home console failed to deliver. Of course, that doesn’t mean the rumours are dead – far from it.

More pointedly, with the doors of E3 barely closed, fresh speculation has sprung up concerning an imminent price cut to the PlayStation 3, which continues to trail the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360 in the marketplace and has long been the most expensive platform available.
The latest rumour comes from IndustryGamers, which cites unnamed industry sources in its report and claims Sony will hack a solid $100 USD from its home console in August to coincide with the retail launch of Electronic Arts’ latest Madden NFL videogame.
According to gathering whispers, the price cut will be officially announced by Sony Computer Entertainment a few days after the game hits store shelves on August 18.
And, while many at E3 were surprised that purportedly leaked photos of a slender PlayStation 3 didn’t lead to a new hardware unveiling during Sony’s keynote address, the scaled down console could yet be given its moment in the trade show spotlight.
Specifically, John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony, recently told Ars Technica that, when it comes to the much talked about PlayStation 3 Slim: “I’d love to live in a world with fewer leaks and more meat… If [the related coverage] focuses more on leaks or what may or may not happen then yes, there is a certain amount of frustration.”
Clearly not a denial regarding the existence of a slimmer PlayStation 3 – not to mention the repeated use of the word “leaks” – Koller's comments could mean Sony will reveal the PlayStation 3 Slim and/or a home console price cut during GCDC in Germany (July 31 to August 02) or at the Tokyo Game Show in Japan (Sept. 24 to Sept. 27).
