Given the continuing user popularity attributed to Facebook, it will likely surprise no one to learn that the social networking titan has now overthrown main market rival MySpace in the United States.

According to monthly U.S. usage figures provided by the number crunchers at comScore, Facebook pulled in 70.28 million users during the month of May, edging out News Corp-owned MySpace and its 70.26 million visitors.
In terms of related growth and shrinkage connected to May’s networking habits, Facebook’s 70.28 million users ranks as almost 50 percent more than it managed during the same period in 2008, while MySpace’s 70.26 million marks a five percent year-on-year loss.
Registering massive growth of more than 2,700 percent in May, micro-blogging service Twitter emerged as the third most popular community site in the U.S. thanks to the attention of 17.6 million users.
Facebook’s overhauling of MySpace in the United States was perhaps to be expected considering that the network is already the world’s leading online social community.
The most current worldwide monthly figures (April 2009) offered up by comScore showed Facebook leading the market with 307.1 million users, while MySpace was found to be lagging some way behind in second place with 126.9 million.
In related news, a new individual user name URL feature offered by Facebook has resulted in 5.75 million account holders registering for a free personalised Internet address within the opening 48 hours of availability.
