According to our office calendar the date is June 25, which makes it a bit too late and far too early for scandalous April Fool’s pranks. That being said, iconic videogame development studio id Software has apparently been absorbed by none other than ZeniMax Media.

ZeniMax, parent company of Bethesda Softworks – publisher of award-winning titles Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – has this week confirmed the purchase of Texas-based id Software, which is perhaps best known for hugely popular videogame series such as DOOM, Wolfenstein and Quake.
Although now officially tucked beneath the wing of Bethesda, id Software creations currently in production for other publishers will not be adversely affected by the acquisition, while founder John Carmack will continue to helm the studio’s operations.
“No changes will be made in the operations of id Software in the development of its games,” outlined the official ZeniMax release. “All the principals at id Software have signed long-term employment contracts, assuring they will continue in their roles developing games at the studio.”
Describing id Software as being “among the finest game studios in the world,” ZeniMax CEO Robert Altman said the company’s sole intention “is to make sure id Software will continue to do what they do best – make AAA games.”
No financial details regarding the deal have been divulged at this time.
