Once again, rumours regarding the PlayStation 3 have reared up after a leading retailer in Australia moved to clear 40GB versions of Sony’s powerhouse console by hacking liberally at the system’s pocket-testing price tag.

And ‘hacking’ is certainly the operative word to focus on here after Target stores reportedly began offering the PlayStation 3 for a mere $199 AUD, which equates to an outrageously cheap $160 USD.
According to videogame site Gamerz Ink, the unannounced stock clearance was picked up and broadcast by quick-acting bargain hunters on the Whirlpool forums, which resulted in a sudden consumer stampede and virtually empty store shelves in just a matter of hours.
While it remains to be seen if other retailers begin making space, perhaps for a new PlayStation 3 Slim, by offloading the base 40GB model at a cheaper price, seeing its console flying from Target shelves might provide Sony with more incentive to officially reduce unit price, increase its install base, and improve its floundering position in the home hardware market.
While lucky Australian gamers have enjoyed brief access to a more recession-friendly PlayStation 3, the console’s persistently high price point is serving to test the patience of some in the videogame industry.
More pointedly, Activision boss Bobby Kotick has threatened to completely pull software support for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable if Sony does not reduce the home console’s price, which could potentially see Sony deprived of access to heavyweight series such as Call of Duty, Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk.
