If you’re a budding photography eager to venture to colder, wetter and dustier climes in order to capture your visual masterpieces, then optical specialist Pentax has just the rugged camera your potentially dangerous cravings are crying out for.
Just like Volvo... boxy, but good. Image: Pentax.
Meet the new Optio W80, which, according to Pentax, is a sturdy addition to its bulging camera portfolio that stands out from the masses thanks to a robust construction capable of withstanding 16 feet of water depth, chilling temperatures of minus 10 degrees Celsius, and shock drops of up to a metre.
While it’s not the most aesthetically appealing camera on the market, the Optio W80 has been designed to deliver beautiful photos while braving testing environments, not grace the catwalks of Paris or Milan. That said, its somewhat clunky and boxy presentation is offset by an admirable ‘thickness’ of just an inch.
Beyond its ability to suffer through a variety of demanding situations, the Optio W80 is also no slouch in terms of performance, thanks to a 12.1 mega pixel sensor, a 5X internal optical zoom function, a 28mm wide-angle lens, HD video recording capabilities (30fps at 720p), and a decent 2.5-inch LCD display/viewfinder.
Factor in colour flavours of grey, red and blue, alongside additional features such as Fast Face Detection, Smile Capture, Blink Detection, Super Macro and Pixel Track Shake Reduction, and the $299 USD price tag hanging around the Optio W80’s tree trunk of a neck starts to look rather respectable.
