The new HTC Magic has barely hotfooted its way onto retail shelves but that hasn’t stopped handset maker High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC) from officially unveiling the Hero, its next mobile phone device equipped with the Google-backed Android operating system.

Bathed in the industry spotlight on Wednesday and set to arrive as the third HTC-branded device carrying Android – following the Magic and original Dream (a.k.a. G1) – the new Hero handset will stand apart from its stablemates thanks to the inclusion of a customised user interface called Sense.
“HTC Hero introduces a more natural way for reaching out to the people and accessing your important information, not by following the status quo of today’s phones, but by following how you communicate and live your life,” enthused Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corp.
“HTC Sense is a distinct experience created to make HTC phones more simple for people to use, leaving them saying, it just makes sense,” he added.
From a technical standpoint, the ‘Web optimised’ Hero comes equipped with HSPA/WCDMA network connectivity, a generous 3.2-inch HVGA LCD touch screen (320 x 480), a 5.0 mega pixel camera with autofocus, integrated GPS functionality, expandable microSD memory, a digital compass, and even a gravity sensor.
Other features and functions include the Qualcomm MSM7200A processor (528MHz), 288MBs of RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g), a 1350mAh lithium-ion battery promising up to 470 minutes of talk time – and, notably, support for Adobe Flash.
The Sense- and Android-equipped HTC Hero is expected to hit retail in July, with Asia embracing it later in the summer and North America taking stock of its own “distinct” version before the end of 2009.
Regional price points and carriers have not yet been confirmed.
