Good article, and the debate over security and usability is only likely to get more heated, despite the modest response recently. I mean, isn't this essentially the primary issue behind Google's decision to encrypt or not their 'cloud' of services? Folks like myself have been clamoring for Extended Validation SSL encryption on gmail and sites like Twitter for months, but others say it would slow the sites down. I say it's a small price to pay for better security that will help control rampant phishing attempts on these sites. Plus, the speed of ssl and ev ssl encryption is only likely to improve.

Password hiding is another great topic for debate, and I more or less agree with where you fall on it. I like sites that give the option, like ING's log-in page...I typically use it when banking, but in other instances I might not. Especially webmail services, where I type in the wrong password an average of twice a day.

Jakob blew it on this one. I could argue all his points, but his reasoning to unmask is to improve usability for those that are having trouble with it.

So I ask Jakob this...what percentage of business could be lost to those that have trouble filling out a masked form vs. those that will not use a site because the webmaster did not take the simple step of securing the password field?

If my bank stopped masking password fields I would stop using that bank online because they are clearly not taking all security steps, even popular/important ones like masking a password field.
