Is the new high-speed iPhone 3GS about to plunge its maker into operational hot water following reports that suggest certain units of Apple’s latest trend-setting smartphone are running at worrying high temperatures?

According to UK broadsheet publication The Daily Telegraph, owners of the white version of Apple’s high-speed iPhone 3GS are claiming that the device grows so hot that it cannot be physically held and the outer casing even emits a pinkish glow.
While the root cause of the problem has not yet been isolated, user complaints posted to the Apple customer support forum point to increased operational heat output when playing games and/or employing the handset’s integrated GPS technology.
One such poster, an Alan Ziegler, reported that his iPhone 3GS became so hot he had to seek an alternate means of usage in order to prolong communication. “I was on a call for 20 minutes and [the phone] was so uncomfortably hot I had to put it on speaker,” exclaimed Mr. Ziegler.
Cupertino-based Apple Inc. has not yet issued official comment regarding the gathering complaints, but current speculation is linking the instances of overheating with a batch of potentially faulty batteries and related reports of discharge longevity that falls short of the iPhone 3G.
