Not that Apple and AT&T need to beat their corporate chests where the popularity of the iPhone is concerned, but the recently launched iPhone 3GS not only set cash registers ringing on June 19 but also helped itself to a few opening day sales records too.

Specifically, an internal AT&T memo leaked to the Wall Street Journal and MacDailyNews outlines that the new high-speed 3GS smartphone amassed a “best-ever sales day” throughout its chain of retail stores.
The memo also claims Apple’s third-generation 3GS afforded AT&T its second-largest traffic day in stores, largest ever order day through its online store, and also created the most single-day transactions processed by the carrier’s IT systems.
News of AT&T’s success with the iPhone 3GS follows similarly proud claims made by Apple, which said in June that it had sold a million units of its latest smartphone within three days of release – matching the consumer reception that met the iPhone 3G when it launched on July 11 of 2008.
