Looking to tap some of the walk-in consumer popularity enjoyed by market rival Apple Inc., software titan Microsoft Corp. has today announced the first two locations for its upcoming chain of fully-equipped Microsoft stores.

According to Redmond-based Microsoft, its first mall-based bricks and mortar outlets will spring up in the states of Arizona and California, with the former heading for an official opening in Scottsdale and the latter in Mission Viejo.
It’s worth noting that, while the Scottsdale Fashion Square store will open without having to shoulder direct competition from Apple, Microsoft’s decision to plant a store in Mission Viejo’s shopping centre will see it immediately going toe-to-toe with a closely situated Apple store.
When it comes to range of products customers can expect to find upon entering Microsoft’s stores, company communications director Kim Stocks explained to AP that shelves will carry first and third-party software, Zune multimedia devices, Xbox 360 videogame consoles and software, and also notebook computers manufactured by Microsoft partners.
According to Stocks, the new stores have not been created to merely showcase products or replace online purchasing, but are rather a way for Microsoft to give consumers direct one-to-one exposure to the company’s new and existing line of products.
Microsoft has not yet revealed exactly when its first two stores will throw open their doors or whether further outlets will be announced by way of launching a blanket assault on the traditional consumer market.
