The innovative, motion-sensing Nintendo Wii may well be the hottest retail property in the U.S. when it comes to home gaming but, according to new hardware research, the Microsoft Xbox 360 is presently the nation’s most actively used console.

More pointedly, after looking at performance numbers for the month of June, The Nielsen Company has found that Microsoft’s powerful and popular platform is the “most active console” amongst U.S. gamers and boasts the most active gaming user base.
“More Americans are playing the newer consoles,” explained Nielsen in an official statement. “Current generation consoles, such as Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, made up 50% of total share of minutes in June 2009, while last generation consoles, such as Xbox, PS2 and GameCube, made up only 31% of total minutes.”
Usage associated with much older systems, such as the original PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis, contributed 19 percent of the month’s total minutes.
Interestingly, in analysing a six-month usage trend running from January through to June of this year, Nielsen’s research revealed the PlayStation 2 to be the busiest gaming platform in the U.S., followed by the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
Six-month usage connected to the PlayStation 3 left Sony's powerhouse console lagging significantly behind its main market rivals and only just above the original Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo GameCube.
