While Netbook computers offer lightweight portability at recession-friendly prices, most lack for power when pushed to do anything other than surf the Web. Luckily for consumers in the U.S. popular retail chain Walmart is this weekend offering a platform with considerably more power that matches the Netbook price point.
Bigger but cheaper. Heavier but more capable. Fair trade off? Image: Toshiba.
From this coming Sunday, and in return for a measly $348 USD, prospective tech buyers looking for a bargain can pick up a capable 17-inch Toshiba Satellite L355 notebook that punches well above its weight considering the distinctly miniscule price tag.
For less than the cost of many standard Netbook systems, the hefty Toshiba provides users with a 17-inch widescreen TruBrite LCD display (1440 x 900 and native support for 720p), a 2.2GHz Intel Celeron processor (800MHz FSB and 1MB cache) and Intel’s Mobile Graphics Accelerator 4500M.
Already more capable than the vast majority of Netbook alternatives, Walmart’s platform also comes with the Windows Vista Basic operating system, a roomy 250GB SATA hard disk drive (HDD), 3GBs of shared dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM (800MHz) that’s expandable to 4GBs.
Other contributing features include a CD/DVD SuperMulti Drive, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g connectivity, Ethernet and 56K modem connections, a trio of USB 2.0 ports, VGA out, an ExpressCard 34/54 slot and a six-cell rechargeable lithium ion battery.
Not bad, not bad at all… as long as you don’t mind the extra shoulder weight while lugging around a notebook that’s not exactly best placed in terms of convenience and portability.
